Four accidental shootings this week, y’all! Plus, waaaay too many high school boys bringing guns to school. What the hell is up with that, anyway?
• January 14, 2014:
1- We’re going to the Supremes, folks!
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The Supreme Court is set to decide whether a Tennessee man’s misdemeanor domestic assault plea should ban him from gun ownership.
The high court on Wednesday will hear prosecutor’s appeal in the case of James Castleman of Huntingdon.
Castleman pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor domestic assault in 2001. He was then charged in 2009 with illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence. A federal judge threw those charges out.
2- The ex-boyfriend of a student at Hamilton County High School, an adult high school in Chattanooga, drove on campus, fired a gun twice, fled, and was arrested. Ta da. Says a former student:
Ronnie Smith, a former students, says, “All I hear is they came in, bunch of drama, boy and girl broke up.”
That summary deserves some kind of award.
• January 13, 2014:
1- A Carter County man accidentally shot himself in the chin Sunday night while taking off his pants:
Caldwell said Rood told him he had a .25 caliber Baretta pistol in the right front pocket of his pants. He took the pants off and placed them on his dresser, at which time the Baretta discharged, striking Rood in the chin. It was believed the bullet was still in Rood’s neck.
Respect the culture, freedom, most responsible ever, etc. etc.
2- A Collegedale, TN woman came home from church and was relaxing in her mobile home when she got shot in the leg. The incident is under investigation but neighbors in the trailer park say there have been several similar near mnisses in the past due to people playing around with high-powered rifles. You know, the kind that used to be illegal.
3- Back to Carter County, where a man is finally facing charges over shooting his neighbor’s dog last November.
• January 12, 2014:
Two teenagers in Chattanooga were playing with a loaded gun and one was accidentally shot in the head. The injury is not said to be life threatening.
• January 11, 2014:
1- An 80-year-old man shot another man in Campbell County, then had a brief standoff with police.
2- A Unicoi County man was indicted for threatening his family with a gun at a meeting about family finances following the death of the family matriarch. I don’t care how poor you are, nothing causes a family to lose its shit like inheritance issues. You may only have two pots to piss in but your kids will fight to the death over those damn pots.
3- A man was arrested for shooting his estranged wife in a Sam’s Club parking lot in Nashville. From the link:
At the time of the shooting, Vinson was free on $20,000 bond from an arrest from December 14 on charges of aggravated assault against Pack and order of protection violation.
Officials said Vinson was convicted of domestic assault against Pack in 2011. He was also convicted of felony aggravated assault and received a two-year sentence for twice striking Pack’s car with his pickup truck.
How did he get the gun? Anyone? Bueller?!
• January 10, 2014:
1- Several people in Rutherford County narrowly missed getting injured when one of our most responsible EVAH decided to do some target shooting with four of his friends who happened to be convicted felons and of course therefore were not shooting because that would be wrong, etc. etc.:
Four people in the area escaped injury, including college student Hailey McWhorter, who was taking her neighbor’s mail next door when the family’s horses started going wild.
“They looked like they were going to jump over the fence, and I said, ‘Whoa,’” McWhorter said.
She said bullets then came whizzing by.
“It just went flying over my head, so I just ducked down,” she said. “I didn’t know what else to do because if they start shooting, I was like, ‘I might get shot.’”
One bullet struck a double-wide mobile home on Wayside Road and penetrated the bathroom wall, landing in a tub often used by a six-year-old girl.
“If my renter’s daughter had been in the bathtub, it would have killed her,” Jeffrey McWhorter said.
Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate. They believe the gunshots were coming from a farm on Sledge Road in Christiana about 650 yards away.
Two people, Michelle Baker and Troy Barrett, were cutting trees nearby and also reported bullets flying over their heads.
2- A Tennessee teacher pointed a toy gun at a student and told him she “wished it was real” when he didn’t understand the material.
3- A 16-year-old Bartlett High School student was arrested for bringing a .32 semiautomatic pistol onto campus.
• January 9, 2014:
In Jackson, a 16-year-old student shot a fellow student in front of the principal’s office. The victim was shot in the thigh and was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury. Apparently the incident was about a girl.
• January 8, 2014:
A 17-year-old student attempted to commit suicide with a gun in the bathroom of Hardin County High School in Savannah.
• January 7, 2014:
1- A Tipton County man accidentally shot and killed his wife:
Chris said his wife was handing him a pistol when the weapon discharged striking her once in the head.
2- A Kingsport man was arrested after forgetting he had a loaded gun in his backpack. It’s at least the second time this has happened to him in 5 years.
